Study the Bible in Two Years

Thursday – 2 Chronicles 30-31

1.  The Passover was supposed to be celebrated on the 14th day of the first month, but Hezekiah spent the first month getting the temple ready.  Rather than wait almost a whole year, Hezekiah wanted to celebrate this important festival right away.  As you read, find other things that they did that were not exactly as the Lord had commanded.  Note Hezekiah’s prayer in 30:19.  This shows even in the Old Testament: Is the Lord more concerned about the intent or the letter of the Law?  Is He more concerned about the heart or the outward action?

2. What invitation did Hezekiah send out to the northern kingdom ofIsrael?  It is important to know that half of the northern kingdom – all of Galilee – has already been taken by Assyria, and the southern half –Samaria– is being attacked.  Assyriawill surround and besiege the capital in just three years.  This will help you understand Hezekiah’s letter, 30:6-9.  For many inIsrael, this is their last chance to come back to the one true God.  What was their reaction?  30:10-11.  What does this teach you about our efforts to share the Gospel in a post-Christian society?

3.  In Chapter 31, Ezra the author, concentrates on how well the people took care of the priests and Levites, whose job it was to serve the Lord full time.  He was living at a time when things were not as easy or prosperous for God’s people.  With his history report, he is encouraging his people, and us, about our giving.  How?  See 31:10-11.
