Study the Bible in Two Years

Monday – Habakkuk 1-2

Habakkuk prophesied at the same time as Jeremiah, just a few years beforeJerusalemwas destroyed.  He wrote before the Babylonians rose in power, perhaps just before good King Josiah (J17), because he complains of injustice in his own country (1:3,4) and God says he will raise up Babylon (1:6), which many people thought was impossible (1:5).  His book starts out with two complaints, which God answers.

1.  What is Habakkuk’s first complaint?  See 1:2,3.   When is the last time you asked the big “Why” question, because you didn’t understand what is going on in your life?

2.  How does God answer?  Who is going to stop the wickedness and corruption inJudah? What parallels do you see with this and 9/11,  and those who would attack our country?

3.  That answer doesn’t please Habakkuk at all, and brings about his second “Why” question, which is summarized in 1:13.  What is his complaint?

4.  How does the Lord answer?   What will happen to the righteous?  See 2:4.  What makes us truly righteous in God’s eyes?  See how Paul quotes this passage in Romans 1:16-17 and Galatians 3:10-13.

5.  The Lord is going to use wickedBabylonfor his purposes.  What is he going to bring about through their evil?   See 2:14.
